This course is designed to enhance the CNA’s ability to provide compassionate care for adults with mental health challenges in long-term care settings. Learners will gain expertise in recognizing mental health conditions, applying trauma-informed care, and de-escalating challenging behaviors. In addition, learners will engage in prioritizing resident well-being and employing effective communication strategies to foster positive relationships while emphasizing self-care to prevent burnout.

 

 

 

 

What To Expect

This course is fully online and self-paced. It contains the following seven modules and you have the opportunity to retake assessments until you master your skills.

  • Module 1: Introduction to Mental Illness & SMI
  • Module 2: Battling Stigma
  • Module 3: Empathic Listening
  • Module 4: What is Trauma?
  • Module 5: Managing Challenging Behaviors: Crisis Prevention & De-escalation
  • Module 6: What is Peson-Centered Care?
  • Module 7: Understanding Mental Health, Distress, and Disorders

You can expect to spend anywhere from 8-12 hours completing the entire course. Upon successful completion (80% on assessments), you will receive an award certificate indicating your specialty and a digital badge that is independently verifiable through Credly to share on social media.
